Chonco's and Pearls
18’’ In Length, 9.25 Sterling Silver 40 strand liquid Silver Necklace with a 9.25 Sterling Silver Enhancer clip Pendant. The Vintage Circa 1930’s Conch Style Pendant with Genuine Turquoise Saw tooth set Gemstone is a Piece from My Mom’s Concho Belt she passed onto me. The Sunburst pattern is stamped on the Concho.
Back in the 1930’s Coins were sill minted in Sterling Silver. Navajo Artisans melted down Mercury Head Dimes and other Coins and hand hammered out jewelry, these Concho’s are from around that time period.
The Larger Concho was the Buckle and the Earrings are the smaller pieces from the belt. I added the 10mm Natural Fresh Water Peacock Cultured Pearls to add some Drama to a Classic Southwest look. The Pearls have Excellent Luster and Orient, they are a Pewter Grey Black.
The Earrings are 9.25 Sterling Silver with Concho Style hooks, the Concho’s are a Sunburst stamped pattern with saw tooth set Genuine Turquoise Gemstones, light weight on the ear.
The Chonco’s are Vintage and you will be hard pressed to find many around in such good condition. I hesitated taking apart the Belt, but as I have always done when designing is to think about how I am going to repurpose an item to create new ideas for wearable art.
There is always a story to tell, and in this case my Mom was given this Concho Belt by my oldest Sister who lived in New Mexico, many years ago and Mom wore this belt often over the years. Both my Sister and Mom have passed, and I can only imagine they are both watching me from above talking in Heaven saying, ‘‘Here we go again, that kid keeps taking my stuff apart !” Yep I’m sure I haven’t changed much over the years I’ve been making jewelry since I was 5, it all started with 1950’s pop beads. Now I’m dating myself.
This is a Beautiful timeless set, I Designed these pieces to go into my Pale’ Koke Cattle Company Paniolo Lifestyle Wearable Art Collection. You can remove the Enhancer from the 40 strand Liquid Silver Necklace and add it to a strand of pearls or a Silver Omega.
This is a true collector piece.
I was always getting into mischief, sometimes I was the cowgirl but most of the time I was the crazy little girl wearing Buster Browns and sneaking around. My Mom tried her best to keep me in a dress, but believe me it didn’t last long, once we moved to Hawaii in the early 1960’s it was no shoes, shorts and a tee, running wild in Kona.
